Cash or Card? Paying for Rides and Deliveries in Nigeria

On a wet Monday morning, Zainab learned something about herself: she was not a morning person, and she was definitely not a morning person in the rain. She was already late, her hair was frizzing, and her ride was two minutes away. She dug through her bag for cash and found only a crisp, useless five thousand naira note, far more than the fare and impossible for any driver to change at 7am.

What followed was the small, particular misery of a rushed payment gone wrong. The driver had no change. She had no change. They looked at each other in the drizzle while the minutes she did not have ticked past. They sorted it out in the end, but Zainab arrived at work flustered, damp, and quietly annoyed at the entire morning.

The morning that went differently

A few days later, on a friend's advice, she added a card to the app. She did not think much of it at the time. Then came another early start, another ride, and this time when she reached her destination she simply stepped out. The fare had already been handled in the app. No note, no change, no standing in the weather doing arithmetic. She was through the office doors before she even registered that she had paid.

That was the moment the difference clicked. On a busy morning, a card meant she could just move.

But cash never left her side

Here is the part Zainab appreciated most: nobody made her give up cash. On the Sunday she visited her aunt, who liked to press a little extra into the driver's hand and would have been scandalised by a cashless goodbye, Zainab paid cash and it was perfectly simple. She had seen the fare before booking, she had the right amount ready, and she handed it over with a smile.

That is really the whole point. Cash is simple and familiar, and it is there for the days you prefer to pay in person or would rather not store card details. Card is there for the days you want speed, a clean record of your trips, and no fumbling for change on a rainy pavement. Neither is the right answer. The right answer is whichever one fits the morning you are having.

Small things that keep it smooth

Whatever you choose, a few habits help. Confirm the fare shown before you book, so the price you agreed is the price you pay. If you are paying cash, try to have close to the exact amount ready. And keep your app updated so your payment options load the moment you need them.

Zainab keeps a card on file now and still pays cash when the mood, or the aunt, calls for it. She stopped dreading rainy Mondays, at least the payment part of them. Open the app, set your destination, and pay the way that suits the day you are in.
